Ashwin Shukla Pratipada to Navami
The demon Mahishasura, blessed that no man or god could kill him, terrorised the three worlds. The combined energies of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva manifested as Goddess Durga, who fought Mahishasura for nine nights and slew him on the tenth — Vijayadashami. The nine nights remember the nine forms (Navadurga) she revealed.
Sharad Navratri honours Shakti — the primordial feminine — in her nine aspects: Shailaputri, Brahmacharini, Chandraghanta, Kushmanda, Skandamata, Katyayani, Kaalratri, Mahagauri and Siddhidatri.
