Griha Pravesh

Life-cycle
2–3 hours Entering a newly built or newly bought house on an auspicious muhurat.

Sanctifies the new home, removes vastu doshas and invokes the deities of directions (dikpalas) and household deities for prosperity.

Step-by-step Vidhi

    Vastu Shanti

    Worship Vastu Purusha at the centre of the house with kalash and homa.

  2. 2

    Ganesh & Navagraha

    Invoke Ganesha and the nine planets to remove obstacles.

  3. 3

    Pravesh

    Enter the house right foot first, carrying the kalash, accompanied by a cow if possible.

  4. 4

    Milk Boiling (Paal Kachu)

    Boil milk in the new kitchen and let it overflow towards the east — a sign of abundance.

  5. 5

    Aarti & Bhoj

    Perform aarti, distribute prasad, and feed Brahmins or family members.

Samagri checklist

  • Kalash filled with water, coins, mango leaves and coconut
  • Navagraha samagri and Vastu Purusha image
  • Cow (if available) for entering first, milk to boil over
  • Turmeric paste, kumkum, akshat, flowers, ghee lamps
  • Havan kund, samidha and ghee for the homa

Vastu Mantra

ॐ वास्तोष्पते प्रतिजानीह्यस्मान्स्वावेशो अनमीवो भवा नः।

Om Vāstoṣpate pratijānīhyasmān svāveśo anamīvo bhavā naḥ.

Regional variants

South India

Paal Kachu (boiling milk till it overflows) is the principal rite; performed in Uttarayana.

Gujarat / Maharashtra

Kalash with swastika, lighting of akhand jyot for 24 hours after pravesh.

North India

Cow and calf enter first; threshold worshipped with kumkum and rice.
