A vrat dedicated to Lord Vishnu in his Satyanarayan form. Listening to the five-chapter katha is considered essential for the puja's fruit.

Step-by-step Vidhi

  1. 1

    Kalash Sthapana

    Place a kalash filled with water, mango leaves and coconut on a bed of rice; invoke all tirthas.

    Ganesh & Navagraha

    Worship Ganesha first, then the nine planets for an obstacle-free vrat.

  3. 3

    Satyanarayan Avahana

    Invoke Lord Vishnu into the murti and perform shodashopachara puja.

  4. 4

    Katha Shravan

    Listen to all five adhyayas of the Satyanarayan katha attentively.

  5. 5

    Aarti & Prasad

    Perform aarti and distribute the sapatha prasad to all who attended.

Samagri checklist

  • Satyanarayan murti or photo of Vishnu
  • Banana leaves and stalks for the mandap
  • Panchamrit (milk, curd, ghee, honey, sugar)
  • Tulsi leaves, betel leaves and nuts, coconut
  • Wheat flour halwa (sapatha prasad) with banana and milk
  • Akshat, kumkum, sandalwood, flowers, ghee lamp, incense

Maharashtra

Performed on Purnima evenings; sapatha is sheera with banana and milk.

Bihar / UP

Performed on Purnima or Sankashti, often after sunset, followed by community katha.

Bengal / Odisha

Known as Satya Pir / Satya Narayan; chappan bhog or panchamrit prasad is offered.
