45–60 min Diwali Amavasya, Fridays, Varalakshmi Vratam, Kojagari Purnima.

Devi Lakshmi is invoked for prosperity, harmony and abundance — both material and spiritual. Cleanliness of the home is the foremost preparation.

Step-by-step Vidhi

  1. 1

    Ghar Shuddhi

    Clean the house thoroughly, draw a rangoli at the entrance, light diyas.

  2. 2

    Sthapana

    Place Lakshmi and Ganesha murtis on a red cloth with a kalash to their right.

  3. 3

    Ganesh Puja

    Worship Ganesha first with durva, modak, akshat.

  4. 4

    Lakshmi Avahana

    Invoke Devi Lakshmi with Sri Suktam or moola mantra; offer lotus and red flowers.

  5. 5

    Aarti & Mahaprasad

    Perform aarti with multiple ghee lamps, offer naivedya, and distribute prasad.

Samagri checklist

  • Lakshmi (and Ganesha) murti or photo
  • Silver/copper coins, kalash with water
  • Lotus or rose flowers, marigold, betel leaves and nuts
  • Kheer or batashe and gud-dhania prasad
  • Akshat, kumkum, haldi, sandal, ghee lamps
  • New broom (a symbol of Lakshmi) and account books

Lakshmi Gayatri

ॐ महादेव्यै च विद्महे विष्णुपत्न्यै च धीमहि। तन्नो लक्ष्मीः प्रचोदयात्॥

Om Mahādevyai cha vidmahe, viṣṇupatnyai cha dhīmahi, tanno Lakṣmīḥ prachodayāt.

Regional variants

North India

On Diwali Amavasya in Pradosh Kaal; Ganesha worshipped to the left, Kuber to the right.

Bengal

Kojagari Lakshmi Puja on Ashwin Purnima with khichuri bhog and conch shells.

South India

Varalakshmi Vratam in Shravan; the kalash itself is decorated as Devi.
